Bruxism is defined as the grinding of teeth or the clenching of the jaw with abnormal force. It is
a subconscious behaviour that can lead to poor quality of sleep; damage to the enamel surfaces of teeth; headaches and disorders of the Temperomandibular Joint.

Bruxism effects 8-10% of the population and it is most common in 23-44 year olds. 80% of bruxism sufferers may be unaware that they have a problem as they may suffer from it during sleep. Bruxism can also occur however during the day when carrying out activities such as driving.

70% of bruxism sufferers develop bruxism as a direct result of stress and anxiety and this is where hypnosis plays an invaluable role in aiding the reduction or even the cessation of the disorder. Hypnotherapy in the treatment of bruxism uses relaxation and visualisation techniques to relieve stress and anxiety and therefore reducing or stopping the stress response of bruxism. There is clinical evidence to support the statement that hypnosis is effective in the reduction or cessation of bruxism.
