Pain Management
Pain can be defined as a symptom of some physical hurt or disorder. It is a feeling that is triggered in the nervous system. Pain can be sharp or dull; it can come and go; or it can remain constant. It can be felt in a particular area (such as your back, head or legs) or it can be felt all over the body (such as when your muscles ache from the flu).
In some ways pain can be helpfull; without it you could seriously injure yourself without knowing it. Pain is also your body's way of letting you know that there is something wrong; it helps you realise you may have a medical problem that requires treatment.
Once pain is treated and taken care of, it usually goes away. However, sometimes pain can remain present for weeks, months and even years. This is called chronic pain and it is what is experienced with illnesses such as arthritis and cancer. Sometimes the cause of chronic pain is left unkown.
Hypnosis is used to help manage the pain symptoms. It can alter your perception of the pain to a more manageable one. It uses suggestions, dissociation, imagined analgesia and symptom manipulation to help you reframe your experience of pain.
As I mentionned earlier, pain is your body's way of letting you know that something is wrong. This is why I recommend that you seek advice from your doctor before coming to see me. I will not see anyone for pain management without a medical diagnosis from a GP.
